Two performances of contemporary ballet will take place on October 12 and 13 at Sala Palatului
Maurice Béjart represents a substantial part of the history of 20th century choreography and the Béjart Ballet Lausanne company, led by his successor Gil Roman, is an equally important reference in the world of contemporary ballet. On October 12 and 13, Béjart Ballet Lausanne returns to Bucharest, on the stage of the Palace Hall, with the company’s newest contemporary ballet performance, a premiere in Romania, including Tous les hommes presque toujours s’imaginent and 7 Danses Grecques. Maurice Béjart always wanted to open the world of ballet to a wider audience. In the same spirit, Gil Roman and his dancers keep his work alive by touring it all over the world, both at large events and official receptions, as well as at charity events. A choreographer for 20 years, Gil Roman has been preserving Maurice Béjart’s work and adding new creations to the company’s repertoire.
Tous les hommes presque toujours s’imaginent (choreography: Gil Roman, music: John Zorn)
The show is an exceptional production of intense poetic radicalism – rarely do we have the opportunity to see a creation of such intense, reflective and sensual theatrical quality that pushes all the arts far beyond their limits – Patrick Ferla, Swiss journalist and writer, on Tous les hommes presque toujours s’imaginent. John Zorn is one of the leading composers of contemporary American music. The density and diversity of his extraordinary work, which began in the mid-1970s, and the boldness and artistic freedom he expresses through his creation have never ceased to challenge and fascinate the artistic director of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne. In 2016, the two artists exchange artistic experiences for the first time, talking about cultural heritage and the desire to overcome and break free from it in order to push back the boundaries of art. And in 2018, faced with a considerable workload, Gil Roman dives into the various compositions that make up the universe the brilliant composer explored from 1990 to 2017. In this ballet, step by step, with one movement, one gesture, Gil Roman takes his dancers beyond limits, creating this extraordinary performance that will fascinate you until the last second. 7 Danses Grecques (choreography: Maurice Bejart, music: Mikis Theodorakis) Gil Roman, about this ballet: “What we call “folklore” (from my point of view, I prefer the formula “traditional art”) is always difficult to access and almost impossible to capture, and whether or not it belongs to the traditional culture in question is neither an advantage nor a handicap. Because our civilizations have been so alienated from the traditional spirit, it has become difficult for us to perceive the mental process that gave rise to art in the distant past. There is, however, a key to the problem: to become the other, not to portray it. In order to grasp the original line of creation, its hidden force, it is necessary to understand the roots of the people from a cultural or ethnic group and to minimize the obvious quotations from folklore. For these “danses grecques”, I have tried to limit the authentically Greek “steps” as much as possible. Some dances include two or three of these, others none at all, and these are definitely the most successful, the most Greek!”
Since 2007, starting with his search and effort for contemporary creation, Gil Roman has been maintaining and developing the repertoire of the Béjart Ballet Lausanne. Maurice Béjart’s works are at the heart of this repertoire, with iconic choreographies such as The Rite of Spring, Boléro, New Symphony or Ballet of Life but Gil Roman wants to show the variety of this repertoire with Piaf or The Magic Flute, for example. A choreographer for 20 years, the artistic director has nurtured the repertoire with his own creations.
